Visiting the northernmost point of South America requires careful planning. You must choose between booking an all-inclusive 4x4 tour or piecing together local transport yourself. Both options require local Wayúu guides to cross the unmarked desert.

Can you travel to Punta Gallinas without a tour?

Yes, you can reach Punta Gallinas without an organized multi-day package. However, you still must hire local transport.

You cannot simply rent a car and drive there alone. The journey involves taking public transit to Cabo de la Vela first. Once there, you negotiate a ride with a local Wayúu driver for the final desert crossing.

How independent travel to Punta Gallinas works

The independent route requires multiple vehicle changes starting from Riohacha.

First, take a collective taxi from Riohacha to Uribia. In Uribia, switch to a 4x4 truck heading to Cabo de la Vela. Spend the night there. The next day, hire a local 4x4 guide for the 2 to 3-hour drive to Punta Gallinas.

Comparing the costs

A fully guided 3-4 day tour from Riohacha costs between 800,000 and 1,430,000 COP.

These platform prices change over time, but they include transport, meals, and accommodation. Independent travel costs less upfront. Transport from Cabo to Punta Gallinas runs 130,000 to 150,000 COP round-trip. However, you must pay for all food and hammock stays separately.

Why self-driving is not allowed

You must never drive off-road independently in the La Guajira desert.

The tracks are rugged, unmarked, and shift with the wind. It is extremely easy to get lost. You must have a local Wayúu guide with you. They know the terrain and help navigate informal rope tolls set up by local communities.

The boat alternative

You can bypass the final desert drive by taking a boat from Puerto Bolívar.

You still need to travel through Cabo de la Vela to reach the port. The boat takes about 2 hours to cross the bay to Punta Gallinas. A round-trip costs approximately 140,000 COP. Availability heavily depends on weather and passenger demand.

Questions travellers ask

Are there ATMs in Punta Gallinas?

No, there are no ATMs or card payment facilities in the deep desert. You must bring plentiful cash in Colombian Pesos for the entire trip.

How long is the drive from Cabo de la Vela?

The off-road drive from Cabo de la Vela to Punta Gallinas takes 2 to 3 hours in a 4x4 vehicle.
