En Route to Punta Gallinas: Essential Desert Stops

Reaching the northernmost point of South America requires a multi-day journey through the deep desert. You will pass through several key towns and staging areas before arriving.

There are no paved roads leading directly to the cape. Access requires a rugged 4x4 drive starting from Riohacha. The journey takes you 150 kilometers northeast, crossing through indigenous Wayúu territory.

Most tours and independent travelers stop at these main points to sleep, eat, and restock supplies. Keep plenty of small cash on hand for informal tolls along the unmarked tracks.
